Travel tip
There are two almost parallel volcanic ranges on Oahu: Waianae in the northwest and Koolau in the southeast. The northeast trade winds keep the Koolau mountain range particularly lush and green.
Explore the coastline
The 180 kilometre coastline of Oahu boasts a wealth of amazing attractions. Head to Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu for the wildlife: see the gigantic sea turtles and in the winter months, big wave surfers. And be sure to make a stop at Lanikai Beach on the east side of Oahu. It’s a favourite beach among locals and travellers and is a great spot for a day of kayaking and canoeing or just chilling out.
Hike Diamond Head
Diamond Head is a 230 metres extinct volcano standing majestically in the background of Waikiki Beach. The hour and a half hike to the crater at the top is cool for two reasons: the panoramic view of Waikiki and the south shore; and the fact that you’re hiking up a volcano in Hawaii – pretty sweet. Bring a jacket, as the higher elevations will be cooler than the warm beaches below.
Eat poke (poh-keh)
Do you love sampling local traditional cuisine? Feast on poke, a popular Hawaiian dish consisting of raw bite-sized pieces of fresh fish (usually ahi tuna) seasoned with sea salt, onions, soya sauce, sesame oil and seaweed. Poke is traditionally served with rice and is found all over the Hawaiian Islands, from the local restaurants to most grocery stores.
